Augmented Putting

Atomic Golf, Las Vegas, NV

In this first-of-its-kind experience, Beaudry Interactive took putting to the next level at Atomic Golf, a new cutting-edge golf entertainment facility in the heart of Las Vegas. In addition to 100 of the more traditional driving bays, the property is home to eight digitally augmented putting bays.

The project started off with quite the challenge: design and build a ball tracking system that can follow and ID golf balls in real-time over a putting bay of indeterminate size, indoors and outdoors, with near-zero latency and no unique markers or tags on the balls, i.e., using just regular off-the-shelf golf balls. The result includes a smartly designed overhead camera array, cutting-edge computer vision techniques and tricks to isolate the balls, and a ridiculous amount of math to bring it all together. That is what is working behind the scenes; what the guests see are highly interactive, projection-mapped games that use golf balls to drive the gameplay and bring the fun. Instead of aiming for a cup, guests hit projected targets to score points while cameras track each player’s ball on the turf in real time.

At launch, there are three putting games to choose from, designed for all skill levels, with many more being dreamed up for future rounds.

Bocce Golf: Following the principles of the game of Bocceplayers must get their golf ball as close to the target as possible to score points in this head-to-head competition. The closer they are to a target ball, the more points they can get. But watch out – the entire field could change with a single stroke. Just like the lawn version of Bocce, players can hit the target ball with their current golf ball, completely shifting the target as well as all the points previously awarded.

Around The World: Electrify the field! Score points and charge the field by landing on and closing portals that appear on the field. The targets that appear are electric ports, surrounded by searing red (animated) energy surges growing out of the targets and slowly charging the hex-pattern grid floor on the game’s projected field. Players must land on the targets to close the port and electrify the next.

Territory: Score the most points by gaining control of designated territories across the game space. Players compete in a head-to-head match to capture their opponent's territory while also protecting their own. Players can choose to protect their territory by reclaiming regions (and points) within their territory. Players must strategize as to what is most beneficial: claim or protect?
